Plus it's an easy task that will keep your pup happy and healthy! Let's learn all about!
Boxer Homemade Dog Food Benefits
Boxers may benefit from home cooking in several ways.
- Healthy eating habits
- Quality control
- More affordable
- Healthier
- Portion size control
- Fresh ingredients
- Dietary requirements can be met
Board-certified veterinary nutritionists and diplomates of the American College of Veterinary Nutrition, Jennifer A. Larsen, DVM, MS, Ph.D., and Joe Bartges, DVM, Ph.D., also agree that switching to homemade dog food comes with great advantages such asdiet management, appeasing picky eaters, bond-building, combatting food intolerance and allergies issues, and avoid concern over food recalls1.
Further benefits include preventing many conditions associated with a poor diet, such asobesity, poor skin, coat condition, pancreatitis, diabetes, and reduced immunity.
Food & Boxer Health: Why Feed Homemade?
Boxers are highly prone to developing food allergies, even if they have been eating the same food for many years.
Generally, these internal allergic reactions appear on the skin as a consequence of common ingredients found in dog kibble. Major food allergens in dog food include wheat, corn, protein, and soy. However, kibble's preservatives, artificial coloring, additives, and fillers also play a role in dog allergies.
Unfortunately, Boxers are genetically susceptible to various skin allergies, so avoiding food-related allergies in this breed is vital. Skin allergies can cause scabs, rashes, dandruff, and fur loss that leads to Boxers to bite, scratch, and chew on their paws and fur excessively. Additionally, gastrointestinal upset may occur due to food allergies or intolerances2.
Keep in mind that Boxers are also known to be at risk of hip dysplasia, intervertebral disc disease, and arthritis 3,4. These conditions are heavily related to the weight of your pet. An obese Boxer is more likely to develop problems with their joints due to the extra weight that each limb has to support. The AKC states responsible breeders should screen their Boxers for health conditions such as hip dysplasia and hip/elbow evaluation5. This is why it's crucial to maintain a healthy weight in Boxers. Sadly, even the most expensive kibble often contains high levels of starchy carbs and unhealthy carb content, both of which contribute to the growing epidemic of pet obesity.
According to one of the largest studies of congenital heart diseases in dogs, Boxers are at high risk of developing dilated cardiomyopathy (DCM) 6. Even the AKC advises boxer dogs to be tested for heart conditions such as aortic stenosis and cardiomyopathy. It's crucial for Boxer parents to provide the right nutrition coupled with exercise to keep a healthy heart in Boxers. Recently, the FDA warned that DCM is highly correlated with dogs eating kibble that is falsely labeled 'grain-free.' Often, kibble is marketed as 'grain-free when in fact, the top ingredients include peas, lentils, rice, and wheat7. So, if you are feeding your Boxer this food right now, we recommend steering away from it ASAP.
Another food-related disease common in Boxers is known as Pyloric Stenosis, or stomach disease8. This illness is common among brachycephalic dogs such as Boxers. This stomach disease occurs when the muscles around the stomach become thick, causing complications with food digestion. Symptoms include vomiting, bloating, and rapid weight loss. This is a serious medical issue that requires veterinarian attention. Supplying your Boxer with foods that are easily digestible (i.e., homemade dog food) and feeding smaller meals can help prevent this disease and issues such as bloating, which are common in Boxers.
As you can see, diet is crucial for overall health. The American Box Club states that Boxers are rated the fifth-highest among all dog breeds to have thyroid complications. Hypothyroidism is an autoimmune disorder that can affect a Boxer's mood, energy levels, and organ function. The role of diet, particularly high iodine levels, has resulted in earlier thyroid disease 9,10.
Boxers are at risk for a variety of cancers and appear to have a predisposition for the development of Chronic kidney disease (CKD)9,10.
Research suggests processed dog food such as kibble can cause oxidative stress, which leads to an imbalance between free radicals and antioxidants in a dog's body, raising its risk of cancer11. Including antioxidants in their dietmay help, and it is unlikely to hurt.
On the other hand, CKD is caused by a variety of genetic and environmental factors like ingesting toxic food. CKD develops slowly and presents itself more over time. A diet that's reduced in protein, salt, and phosphorus is ideal, something it's difficult to find with traditional dog food. Foods high in omega-3s are kidney-friendly, and reducing inflammation is one of the benefits.
How Can A Homemade Diet Help Improve Boxer's Health?
Freshly made dog food can benefit Boxer dogs in many ways.
Fresh food diets are often the best long-term solutions for dogs affected by food allergies. Boxer dogs are prone to allergies caused by additives, preservatives, and other potentially harmful ingredients found in kibble. Cooking for your dog helps avoid food allergies and harmful chemicals that are found in kibbles.
Cooking food for your pet allows you control over the ingredients in the recipe, meaning that you can tailor the recipe to ingredients that are safe for your pup. If you are unsure about what ingredients may cause sensitivities or allergies in your pet, we advise doing anAt-Home Food Dog Allergy Test before selecting the ingredients for their next meal.
Also, common dry dog food is tough to digest and harder to break down. Key nutrients like vitamins, minerals, and amino acids are absorbed more quickly with homemade dog food due to their higher bioavailability. This increases inflammatory responses which helps redecue allergy related symptoms at a faster pace or prevent them altogether.
Because obesity can put more stress on your Boxer's bones and joints, which can exacerbate skeletal problems like hip dysplasia, arthritis among others, maintaining a healthy weight is important. In fact, The Association for Pet Obesity Prevention states that over 56% of pet dogs are overweight. Homemade dog food can help your Boxer maintain his ideal body weight. Homemade dog food recipes are easy to modify depending on the amount of carbohydrates, vegetables, proteins, and minerals they need. As an added benefit, studies show that dogs at theirideal body weight live almost 2.5 years longer, with significantly fewer diseases than their overweight siblings. In a study, overweight Boxers lived 11.7 years while normal weight Boxer reached 12.4 years of age approxiamtly12.
When it comes to heart conditions like DCM, homemade allows you to customize your recipes with ingredients that can lower the risks. For instance, if you are worried about the risk of grain-free being linked to DCM in dogs, you can easily create a recipe that's truly grain-free and without other harmful ingredients. As always, follow the guidance of your veterinarian.
And because Boxers are prone to conditions like Pyloric Stenosis, bloating, thyroid, cancer, and chronic kidney disease, having the ability to provide fresh home meals can minimize support, delay, and sometimes prevent the onset of illnesses.
Dogs who suffer from bloat and stomach disease can benefit from a highly digestible home diet that is low in fats and oils. Feeding your Boxer small meals throughout the day and not mixing dry food and water together will help to prevent this common disease and bloating. In the case of cancer, you no longer have to worry about oxidative stress due to processed food. Lastly, CKD and thyroid will most often require a fresh diet specially created by your veterinarian with specific supplementation in some cases.
Boxer Homemade Dog Food Risks
There are a few risks associated with cooking for your Boxer dog.
- Not understanding the nutritional needs of Boxers
- Using inadequate or dangerous recipes
- Not preparing a balanced meal
- Using unsafe or harmful ingredients
- Not understanding the impact of food and dietary changes
- Not understanding your dog's life stages (puppies, adults & senior) nutritional needs
- Neglecting your dog's health conditions
A study by the University of California, Davis, School of Veterinary found that most homemade dog food recipes are lacking key essential nutrients, and other recipes used dangerously high levels of some nutrients.
Even more shocking, research published in The Journal of Nutritional Science concluded 48% of dog homemade diets had an imprecise determination of ingredients and quantities and that71.3 % of dog owners did know how much food to serve per meal. What's more alarming is that 30.4% of the pet parents admitted to purposely changing the recipe, 40% of owners didn't measure the proportions of the ingredients well enough, and 28.3% didn't use any of the recommended vitamins, minerals, or amino acid.
It is very important to understand that cooking for your Boxer is not something you should take lightly. A bad diet can have negative repercussions and affect his health. The best course of action is to talk to a veterinary nutritionist. Your vet can provide you with trusted recipes, advice on your Boxer's nutritional needs, and/or recommendations for homemade dog food delivery services.
Boxer Nutritional Guidelines to Follow
It is important to make Boxer food that contains the 6 essential nutrients recommended by the Association of American Feed Control Officials (AAFCO). AAFCO is the entity responsible for testing and regulating commercial dog foods' nutritional value.
These six nutrients are required in order to support life and function in dogs. A Boxer dog meal plan should also consider your dog'shealth status, activity level, size, breed-specific needs, and weight.
Nutrient | Food | Description |
---|---|---|
Protein | Chicken, lamb, turkey, beef, fish, yogurt and cooked eggs | Builds and repairs muscles and other body tissues. Needed to make new skin cells, grow hair, hormones, enzymes and more. |
Carbohydrates | Oats, brown rice, potatoes, and whole wheat | Source of energy for dogs and supplies glucose needed by the brain, nervous system and other critical organs for normal function. |
Fat | From meats and oils such as olive or sunflower oil, fish oil, canola oils among others | Responsible for providing quality energy. Necessary for the normal development and function of body cells, nerves, muscles, and body tissues |
Minerals | Calcium, potassium, sodium, magnesium, iron, zinc, etc. | Common functions include the formation of bone and cartilage, nerve and muscle function, fluid balance regulation, the transportation of oxygen in the bloodstream and hormone production. |
Water | Water | Hydration is critical in dogs. A dog that loses too much water (10% to 15% of the water in his body) can get very sick and even die. Ensure they have water available throughout the day. |
Vitamins | A, B, C, D, E, and K | Keeps skin and coat healthy, strengthens bones and teeth, and gives them the overall energy that they need to function. |
Because it's common for homemade dog food to lack one or more of these nutrients, using a multivitamin supplement like Zesty Paws Multivitamin Chews can help your pup get a balanced diet.
Since Boxers suffer from a variety of heart-related health problems due to genetic factors out of your control, it is wise to look for foods containing the amino acid L-carnitine to support heart health.
To further provide the best nutrition, in light of a Boxer's propensity to joint problems, it may be valuable to look for food ingredients that have chondroitin and glucosamine, which may help support joint health.

Health Dietary Changes In Boxers
It is possible to manage food-related health conditions in Boxers by modifying their diet.
The nutritional adjustments listed below can help with some conditions if you implementing them in your dog's fresh homemade diet.
Condition | Dietary Needs & Adjustments |
---|---|
Coat Color Changes | Increase amino acids which can be found in protein (>75 grams per 1000 calories) |
Concurrent GI Signs | Avoid foods with tryptamine and histamine such as dairy or fermented vegetables and meats (yes, this includes bacon); try a simple ingredient food trial |
Chronic Itching and Dermatitis | Fortify the diet with Vitamin E, B Vitamins, Zinc, omega-6 and the omega-3 fatty acids found in fish oil; add a dog probiotic; try a simple ingredient food trial |
Dull Coat and Scaling | Adjust EPA and DHA levels in the diet (added fish oil being the most common way); try a food that has added zinc |
Dandruff and Crustiness | Add Zinc and Vitamin A levels |
Some Boxers have a hard time with skin and coat issues. If they have skin allergies or joint pain, adding dog fish oil may be a good idea. The AKC says fish oil promotes healthier coats by reducing itchiness and flakiness in the skin because of its omega-3 fatty acid content which also has other important effects such as promoting improved immunity (especially against cancer) while strengthening heart health in dogs.
Boxer Dog Calorie Requirements
Dog caloric needs are based on their weight. An adult Boxer dog usually weighs between 50 and 80 pounds, so most Boxers would need to eat between1019 and1449 calories per day.
Make sure you follow the 10% rule when feeding treats to your dog. Food would equal 90% of the total calories and treats the remaining 10%.
For instance, if a Boxer weighs 65 pounds. Then, he would need1241 calories per day. If you feed him treats, then that's1117 calories in food (90%) and 124 in treats (10%).Usually, full-grown dogs eat 2 meals per day, so split1241 (or 1117 if feeding treats) into two meals of620 calories each. You can use this calculator to find the exact caloric needs for your Boxer based on his own weight.
Pregnant Boxers can need up to 2 times the amount of food they would normally have as the mother's energy requirements increase after delivery and during lactation. Highly active boxers may require more calories as well. It's important you speak to your vet if this is your case.
Homemade Dog Food For Boxer Puppies
Boxer puppies have differ calorie and nutritional needs than adult Boxers.
Puppies are notoriously cute, but they also need different levels of protein, fats, calcium and nutrients like phosphorus than adult dogs do. If you feed them too few or too many of these essential ingredients in their diet it can lead to lifelong complications like stunted growth.
Puppies are naturally more energetic and playful so it's important for them to get enough food that will keep up with all this activity. The National Research Council recommends you give your puppy twice as many calories as do their adult counterparts of the same breed because puppies' metabolisms typically burn through calories faster due in part to their high level of playfulness as well as rapid growth spurts during adolescence when dogs usually enter puberty between six months and one year old.
Most people worry that they need to change their puppy's calorie and food amount every day because they're constantly growing. That's not necessarily true. "To promote normal growth, most puppies need to be fed the same number of calories, and food, from about 4 months of age to 12 months of age," saysveterinary nutritionist Dr. Justin Shmalberg DVM,from Nom Nom.
Boxer dog puppies should eat3 to 4times a day. When your puppy is a bit older (12 months & up) you can switch to 2 meals daily at scheduled intervals.
Feeding a Boxer puppy at the right time intervals and never missing a meal is key in developing properly and avoiding malnutrition. Following the guidelines set out by AFFCO means ensuring that there are adequate amounts of carbs/fat ratios being consumed along with all necessary nutrients to ensure muscular formation which will maintain physical capabilities during adult life while vegetables provide essential micronutrients such as folic acid.

Pork & Beef, Sweet Potatoe & Rice
If you want to make a healthy meal for your dog, try this recipe. I was afraid of cooking for my dog at first because he has so many allergies but this is really good and easy.
It's the perfect way for your Boxer to get those complex carbs without the grains. And of course, it has protein and healthy fats.
You can make this pork, beef recipe in an instant pot or crockpot. Your Boxer will love the tenderness and juicy and sweet potato rice. Of course, there are added greens: kale, carrots, and blueberries for a healthy boost in nutrients and easy digestion.
Ingredients
- 2 lbs ground pork
- 2-2.5lbs ground beef
- 1 large sweet potato
- 1 large apple, cored
- 2 carrots (or 8 baby carrots)
- 1 cup of kale
- 1/2 cup of blueberries (fresh or frozen)
- 1 cup rice
- 1 1/2 cup water
Directions
- Put the ground meats in a 4-6 quart crockpot. You can really use any ground meat that you would like.
- Peel and chop the potato, apple, and carrots into 1″ pieces. Chop the kale.
- Add all of the fruits and veggies to the crockpot and mix with the meat.
- Cook on HIGH for 3-5 hours or on LOW for 5-7 hours until the meat is browned.
- When the meat mixture is close to being done, cook up the rice with the water on the stovetop. We use long-cooking rice (bring the rice and water to a boil, then turn heat to LOW, cover, and cook for 15-20 minutes). When the rice is done, mix it into the meat mixture.
Note: Separate the food into 1/2c. -1c. portions in small baggies or Tupperware. Keep most of them in the freezer and pull them out about 4-5 at a time and keep them in the fridge. When mealtime comes, we squeeze a bag down the middle to split the serving in half, microwave the meal serving for about 30-40 seconds and then mix it into her regular dog food.
